One of the most common things I hear from couples is how quickly the wedding day goes by, and they’re right. It’s a whirlwind of emotion, excitement, and unforgettable moments. That is why it's best to set up a timeline.
.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “A timeline sounds so stressful!” But here’s the truth: a timeline isn’t there to add pressure, it's there to calm the nerves.
It helps you know what’s happening when, where your photographer will be throughout the day, and what’s coming next. Even more importantly, it helps your wedding party, family, and vendors all be on the same page, so that the day flows smoothly and you can just enjoy every moment.
What parts of the day should be included?
Here are the key moments that are usually part of a wedding day (and that I love capturing!):
- Decor and table setting
- Groom getting ready
- Bride getting ready
- Ceremony
- Group photo
- Family photos
- Bridal party photos
- Couple portraits
- Reception
Photos are one of the few things you’ll have left after your big day, so making time for them in the timeline is more important than you might think. You’ll never regret carving out those extra minutes for golden hour photos or quiet moments together during your couple shoot.
Example of a wedding timeline (10 hours of photography coverage in the summer)
This is a general guide based on a 10 hour wedding day. Your day will likely differ slightly depending on your ceremony time, but this is a good example to use:
11:00 – Photographer arrives at the venue
11:15 – 12:00 – Decor & table photos
12:00 – 13:00 – Groom getting ready, groom details, groomsmen photos
13:15 – 14:55 – Bride getting ready, bridal details, bridesmaids photos, reveals
15:00 – 16:00 – Ceremony, confetti toss & group photo
16:00 – 16:25 – Couple mingles with guests
16:30 – Family photos
16:50 – 17:20 – Bridal party photos
17:30 – 18:30 Couple shoot (hello golden hour!)
18:45/19:00 – Reception begins
21:00 – Photographer coverage ends
A few things that you can add:
- First look with your soon to be husband/wife, family members, or bridesmaids
- Private vow exchange or prayer before the ceremony
And here's a few tips to keep your day flowing smoothly
- Steam suits and dresses the day before. You’ll thank yourself later.
- Take the dress, veil, and bridesmaids’ dresses out early in the morning to breathe and be steamed.
- Get your details (perfume, rings, jewellery, shoes) into a separate box so everything’s ready for me to photograph when I arrive and so that you know everything is there for your wedding day.
- Family photo list. Create a list of all the family members that you want photos with during family pictures.
- Finish decor early so you can relax during hair and makeup.
- Walk slowly down the aisle. Take it all in. It’s your moment.
- Mingle with your guests. They came to celebrate with you!
- Enjoy your couple shoot. It’s a beautiful moment for just the two of you, You’re officially married!
- Don’t let family or friend drama upset your day. Nothing is worth your peace and joy.
